Question: Which way should I direct my business? Will continuing on this path bring more satisfaction in the long run?
Dear M,
Using the Gendron Tarot deck, I have done a 3 card reading based on your question: "Which way should I direct my business?"
Your additional question about staying on the current path indicates that you may have an idea in mind as to where you are thinking of taking your business, and you are wondering if continuing your business in the direction you are going now, or changing that direction in some way, is at the root of what you are asking. Since I don't know exactly what your other option(s) may be at this time, we will look at a three card reading that will simply look at the outlook for continuing as things are now, or if a change in direction would be more advantageous. The cards I've been shown are:
The current path
- II The High Priestess
A new direction - 8 of Wands
Aids in deciding - Prince of Cups Reversed
=====
2001 Year Card: XII The Hanged Man
I've included an additional card here to see if this is the year in which you should be considering making any changes. Your card for this year (2001) is The Hanged Man. This is a card of suspension, of waiting. This would indicate that this year, at least, is not the time to be trying to change things. Instead, just hang out and observe what is going on around you, looking below the surface to see what's really going on and for deeper, truer indications of where you should go next before taking action without knowing the whole story or the whole situation.
THE CURRENT PATH: The High Priestess
Of the two directions, this is the one that got the Major Arcana card (one of the first 22 cards in the tarot deck). This would indicate that this is the direction that is having the greatest impact on your life and business right now. It is a card that indicates there are still things to learn, still things to know, still things to uncover and bring to light (in terms of awakening and knowledge). And as the High Priestess, you are in the process of doing this. This current business path is revealing to you what you are capable of, what the possibilities are, what the underlying, deeper purpose and direction for you is as it relates to your business. This is another card that is about things happening under the surface (as we saw with the Hanged Man) that still need to come to light. So that would suggest that there are still things that need to be accomplished, learned and completed on this current path before a change of direction is in order. This is often the card that comes up when a new business is being started. You've indicated you already have a business, but this card would suggest there are still some new possibilities and avenues left to explore and achieve on this current path rather than needing to make a complete change in direction.
Basically, this card says that, for the moment, staying on this current path and taking your business around the next curve would be better than completely turning the corner onto a new road.
A NEW DIRECTION: 8 of Wands
This is the card of swift action and fast movement. There is a hint of success in this card for this new direction. However, this new direction will need to be taken when you are ready to jump in with both feet and take the express train to success. The Hanged Man as your Year Card suggests that a sense of holding back and waiting is in order for now, at least through the end of the year. So that says to me that the quickness of movement and change involved and needed with this new direction is not something that you or the business is ready for at this particular moment.
But wait, let's glance into next year...your Year Card for 2002 is the Transition (or Death) card. That is the card of great change, putting something old behind you and starting something new. And the 8 of Wands is a card that indicates career (the suit of Wands) success that comes quickly and surely as things move forward at a breakneck pace. So what we see with the two cards coming up here is not that this new direction you are contemplating is the wrong thing to do, or something that is not going to happen. Instead, it there is the indication that you should hold off on making any big changes to the business at the moment, making sure you've uncovered and exploited all of the possibilities and opportunities of the current path (those things beneath the surface that both the Hanged Man and the High Priestess represent) so that there are no unknowns in the foundation of what you want to do that could possibly weaken the foundation by popping up to the surface and surprising you later when you don't have the time or energy to deal with them because everything will be happening so fast for you.
AIDS IN DECIDING: Prince of Cups Reversed
The first indication here is the reversed Cups. This says that the decision to change the direction of the business should not come from a place of emotion and sentiment. In other words, it's a decision that should come from the head (logical, well thought out) rather than from the heart (driven by emotion or sentiment). Also, the reversal of the Prince is a sign of selfishness, which says that the change of direction should not come about simply and only based on what you want, but based on the good of the whole. And, looking at the reversal of the Cups again, the decision should also be weighed against whether changing the direction at this time would be an emotionally draining and exhausting experience. The Prince of Cups can represent a message coming in, but reversing that indicates a delay to that. So again we have the sense of "wait" or "idleness" here that goes with what we've talked about above. Now is not the right time to be changing direction. Not that it is not going to happen (because the 8 of Wands shows us that a change of direction would ultimately be satisfying and successful for you...and the upcoming year card of Transition indicates some sort of big change happening during the course of the next year). it just says that right now is a time when you should making sure that everything that can be has been mined from the current business direction so that a solid and stable foundation is in place (with no hidden cracks or flaws under the surface that can cause problems later) before moving the business in a new direction. Because once that new direction is embarked upon, things will be happening very quickly, and you want to be able to take advantage of and enjoy that rapid success and movement forward without having to deal with some surprise from the previous direction at some point.

Question: What is the next major step in my career path? I don't mean what job, but what type of work do you see me doing? And how long before I am completely self employed?
Dear M,
Using the Gendron Tarot deck, I have done a 6 Card reading based on your question: "What is the next major step in my career path?"
You asked a number of questions, and a tarot reading is best when it focuses on a single question at a time. So I have focused on your question about your next career path, since that can encompass some of the other things you asked about such as the type of work and being self-employed. Also, since you were asking about a timeframe in terms of being self-employed, this reading will also look to timing as it relates to the possibility of a new career path and whether that might include being self-employed or not on this new path. The cards I've been shown are:
Next step on career path
- Queen of Swords
Obstacles to be cleared (or Tasks to be Undertaken) - Princess of Pentacles
Will this new path be done alone - 5 of Cups
What is the right time - 6 of Swords
Will M be able to do it - 5 of Swords
What will M gain - 8 of Wands
=====
Life Card: IV The Emperor
Soul Card: 0 The Fool
2001 Year Card: IX The Hermit
NEXT STEP ON CAREER PATH: Queen of Swords
The Queen of Swords is the card of the professional woman, the woman who rises to the top, to positions of power and influence. This is a person that is her own boss and in charge of whatever she is doing. This is an extremely astute and capable businessperson and one who doesn't need to rely on anyone but herself to make things happen and to get the job done. As an indicator of a new career path, it would suggest one that you forge for yourself. This Queen uses her sword to get right to the point, go for that which is at the heart of the matter, and cut away the people and things that hold her back or get in her way. Now, there is caution here in that it can become easy for this type of person to use that sword in a less than judicious or friendly manner. But the card is upright, so there is a sense that you have the wisdom and understanding of how and when to use the sword, and how and when to simply have it by your side. This is a card of someone who strikes out on their own and does what they think and know to be right. So in that sense, there is a bit of foreshadowing for independent type of work (freelance, consultant) or self-employment as being a part of the next major career path for you. Simply stated, the Queen of Swords represents the Next Step on Your Career Path as being one in which you step out on your own, coming into your own as a businessperson, confidently and firmly in charge of your career path and destiny.
OBSTACLES TO OVERCOME - or - TASKS TO BE UNDERTAKEN: Princess of Pentacles
The first thing that comes from the Princess of Pentacles is that you may not have to go far in order to find the environment (the suit of Pentacles) in which you will pursue this next step on your career path. There may be some slight adjustment in environment, but it appears by the image in the card that the environment in which you feel the most a part of, one that you feel is an organic extension of yourself and where the environment supports and nourishes you as much as you take care of it, that is the type of environment this indicates as being key to your next step. The obstacle or task here is to identify that environment (are you working outside of the home, but working from home would be that type of environment described above for you; or are you working in a sterile, corporate environment, and a more natural, organic environment would be more conducive for you). And once identified, the task will be to play your role in the circular cycle of give and take, nourish and support. You can't just expect the environment to provide everything for you. You will have to invest in that environment as much as it gives you what you need or look for from it.
This is also a card of hard work, patience and persistence. This new step is not one that will just happen overnight. And it will be one that will require constant and consistent work and maintenance to keep going. However, this is a great card in the sense that it illustrates you will get out of it as much as you put into it, again that circular existence versus all give or all take. So you have your work cut out for you, but you will reap a satisfying and "full body" reward from it, meaning both materially and spiritually. And again, this is a solitary figure making their way on their own...another arrow in the direction of eventual being your own boss or self-employment.
WILL THIS NEW PATH BE DONE ALONE: 5 of Cups
Well, what more solitary card can there be in the deck? This card, as a 5, suggests the challenge and changes that you will have to endure on this new career path. It also indicates by the suit of Cups that it will be a process of heading in this new direction by finally being able to put old feelings, issues, attachments, expectations, etc. in the past and leaving them there so you can move forward. This is a difficult process, because this card can be a time of saying goodbye to old friends, old ways of seeing yourself and what you do. But it is also heading in a new direction that offers new cups from which to drink - new relationships to make, new levels of intuition and artistic expression to explore. So again, we do see you heading in the direction of self-employment, or at least a path that allows you much more autonomy and self-management and self-direction than you've had in the past.
WHAT IS THE RIGHT TIME: 6 of Swords
Based on the timing system that I use when reading the cards, this would point to the 6th week of Winter, so late January or early February timeframe. This would say to me that the best time for you to embark on this new career path would come at the beginning of a new year, when things can be cleanly put to rest at the end of the previous year (that 5 of Cups) and the start of a new year can also reinforce that feeling of a new start in terms of career. This is a card that, being the suit of Swords, suggest this time period would be when the ideas and thinking about what to do and how to do it are in place. Then, with the new year as the goal, that is when you start to put those ideas and plans into motion, raising them up from inside the mind and starting to put them out into the world as you begin to move forward on your new path. The number 6 is a number of expansion, so we see that reiterating that this late January, early February time period is the best time for you to start expanding those ideas into forward movement. And once again, the image on this card is that of a single woman lifting her candle to light the way on where to go...another indication of you embarking on a path that is of your own doing, your own making, and one that will ultimately succeed or fail based on you.
WILL M BE ABLE TO DO IT: 5 of Swords
Well, this card basically says that you are your own worst enemy in making this happen. If you can overcome the doubts and worries and the tendency to talk yourself out of something because of how you build it up and over analyse it in your head (which may not really be a reflection of the reality of the situation), then you have a good chance of success. This is a card about coming to terms with what has been lost. As we saw in the 5 of Cups, there will be things that you will have to emotionally separate and move on from. And coming to terms with that, rather than constantly second guessing yourself about whether what you did was the right thing, will be key to you being able to succeed. That Queen of Swords is one confident, straightforward woman. Here, in the 5 of Swords, it is necessary to not let those other four swords intrude on your vision and determination, keeping to that one single sword that the Queen wields representing that sureness of vision, spirit and ability to conquer and succeed.
WHAT WILL M GAIN: 8 of Wands
This card represents forward movement on a deep level of satisfaction and fulfillment. There is a rapidness to the movement which indicates that things will happen quickly for you once they are put into motion. There is also a spiritual aspect to the suit of Wands, so this shows that this new path will be one that will bring you a sense of spiritual satisfaction and purpose as it falls into place and starts to happen and succeed fairly quickly. Now, we saw above, especially with the Queen of Swords and the Princess of Pentacles, that there will be lots of hard work involved in making this happen. But the success and fulfillment that you will get from it will be great and fairly quick in its realisation.

2001 Year Card:V Hierophant
CAREER: The Hermit Reversed - The Deceiver Reversed - 4 of Cups Reversed
The reversed Hermit card indicates that the next six months will be a period in which you will be taking your career and those things that you do or create in relation to your career out into the world. The Hermit card coming up here indicates that you are coming out of a period in which you have been somewhat isolated or closed off from the world, focusing more on yourself and your own personal world rather than the larger world around you. But reversing this shows us that these upcoming months will be a time in which you start to get back out into the world, taking what you have learned or have been focusing on or have been creating out of your world to share with that larger world around you.
The reversed Deceiver card (more traditionally knows as the Devil card) indicates that these next few months will be a period in which you will be loosening some of the constrictions and boundaries that you have placed on yourself in regards to how you view your career and what you see yourself doing in the world. This is a nice card to get in the reversed state because it shows that there is an awareness of the fact that the things that have been holding you back or restricting you are really things of your own doing. This, in combination with that reversed Hermit card next to it, shows us that the next few months will be a time in which you are releasing the mentality of "I can't. . . " or "I don't know how to. . . " or "This will never work or be acceptable. . . " and coming into a place where you realise that those restrictions and feelings of impossibility are products of your own mind rather than reality, and you will start to venture your ideas and product out into the world, ready to show the world who you are, what you have to offer and challenge them to accept those things on your terms rather than on their terms.
The reversed 4 of Cups indicates that this will be a period of emotional turbulence for you. 4 is the number of stability, and reversing that is basically like getting on a roller coaster. This shows us that you may tend to go from feelings of euphoria and being on top of the world to complete and utter disappointment and defeat. But neither of these states will be based on reality, because the actuality is somewhere in between those extremes. The reversal of this card also shows that this will not be a period of boredom for you. Many things will be happening that will keep you stimulated (be it up or down) and also create a sense of emptying out the old and starting to fill it with the new on an emotional and intuitive level - new possibilities. This will be making way for new feelings, and a refreshing newness of inspiration and creativity - hence the lack of boredom. This being a minor arcana card shows us that the release of self restrictions represented by the reversed Deceiver and the stepping back out into the world represented by the reversed Hermit will result in an everyday manifestation of inspiration, intuition and creativity in terms of your career.
With two major arcana cards showing up here, the next six months are going to be a time of great change and movement in the area of career for you, and these changes and movements are going to have profound effects on your career, how you see your career and yourself in terms of a career, and the direction in which your career is going to be heading.
HOME: 7 of Pentacles - Ace of Cups - 6 of Swords
The 7 of Pentacles suggests that home is the environment in which you feel most comfortable when doing work. Do you work from home?Because this card would suggest that what you do in terms of work is happening in the home environment (the suit of Pentacles combined with the position of Home in which this card appears). This is a card that shows there is work to be done, but it also says that the work will be something you enjoy doing and work that will pay off for you with proper time, care, cultivation and growth. And being a 7 (in the scheme of the Ace through 10 cycle) indicates that you are already in the environment in which you need to be (this position be the Home would suggest that you work out of your home or do something out of your home that you love doing and that you are either getting paid for or hoping to get paid for), it's just a matter of tending to that garden you've already planted.
And the Ace of Cups holds the promise of new emotional and intuitive and artistic possibilities that will be starting to pop up in the home environment. This card coming up in the Home position would indicate that your greatest creative and intuitive place is the place you call Home (whether it be the actual space in which you live, the surroundings, the city or country, whatever it is that really conveys that sense of Home to you). The overflowing water in the Ace of Cups card represents the emotional, intuitive and creative nourishment needed to feed and stimulate the work and growth of the garden we saw in the seven of Pentacles above.
The 6 of Swords can indicate a few things here. It is a card of travel, often foreign travel, so there may be some travel coming up for you in the next 6 months or so that is in some way connected to your Home (this isn't just where you live, but also things like family that make up the concept of Home). This card also shows the need for cautious but steady progress forward. The Ace of Cups is an untamed dynamo force that will wash over things like a flooding river. The 6 of Swords is the reminder to not get swept away by that torrent. Instead, use it bit by bit as you move forward, thinking things through, expanding but at a realistic pace. Don't be afraid to tackle the possibilities that the Ace of Cups shows us, but also don't try to conquer and achieve everything at once.
FINANCES: Queen of Swords - King of Cups Reversed - 7 of Wands Reversed
The Queen of Swords indicates that the next six months will be a time in which you will have to be objective and prudent in terms of your finances. This will be a time in which you will need to use the Sword to cut away those things that are not really necessary (luxuries versus needs) with an objective, logical, swift hand. The reversed King of Cups right next to this shows us the need to not let sentimental attachments get in the way of what needs to be cut back or completely cut off. This may be a bit difficult, because the reversed 7 of Wands indicates the need for action coupled with the need to get perspective on what is important (that which stays or just gets cut back) and what is not (that which can be cut away). I also think that the reversed 7 of Wands next to the reversed King of Cups indicates that if you do let your heart or sentiment get in the way of doing what needs to be done (represented by the Queen of Wands), then you will veer towards a feeling of burnout and being on edge. So use that Queen of Swords to let your head rule the financial department, and put your heart into your career and home that we saw above. Follow your heart in terms of your career, but follow your head in terms of finances.
RELATIONSHIPS: Queen of Wands Reversed - The Fool Reversed - 10 of
Cups
An interesting combination of cards here. The reversed Queen of Wands shows that your passion and drive over the next six months probably won't be in the area of relationships. I think we've already seen that there are so many exciting, stimulating and new things going on in your Career and Home areas above that you won't even have time let alone inclination to really be thinking about relationships.
The reversed Fool card kind of reiterates this in the sense that looking for new horizons and taking new chances (meeting new people, going out on dates) won't really be something that is a priority during the next half year.
But then we get that 10 of Cups. Hmmm. . . Well, first of all, it shows us that even though this won't be an area on which you are really focusing or putting much time or energy, you'll still be happy. And I think that the Ace of Cups in that Home area will be overflowing and filling up the ten cups here so that your happiness and emotional satisfaction will be coming from the creativity, inspiration and new possibilities that we saw both there and in the reversed 4 of Cups in the Career area. But then, this also is a card that shows that happiness doesn't just come from being alone. And that, combined with the other two cards in this area, may indicate that someone you already know or already have some sort of relationship with (especially in terms of that reversed Fool card indicating the lack of new risks and looking to new things, but rather, staying with what is familiar and known) may be around and you may find yourself getting the support and emotional satisfaction you need from that person. However, I don't think this is a longterm relationship (in the romantic sense) person, because this is a card of the number 10, which shows the completion and fulfillment of an ongoing cycle, but also is preparing you for something new (the return to the Ace). And that may be a relationship that is just starting with someone in your Home environment (again, remember to think beyond just the walls in which you live when defining the word Home) as represented by the Ace of Cups in that area. But don't let the newness and excitement of that cloud the judgement you need as represented by that 6 of Swords. It's just the Ace. . . give it time to calm down and move forward without letting it consume you and carry you away from other things going on that we saw in the other areas of Career and Home.
FUTURE: The Universe - Ace of Swords - The Tower
This area looks beyond the six months you asked about. This looks at where the things we talked about above that will be going on over the next six months may be leading you when looking more longterm. And what an amazing trio of cards to get in terms of a longterm outlook!
The Universe card says that the next six months are going to be the building blocks that will create the foundation upon which you will be able to create and achieve everything you're hoping for. This card shows that you will ultimately come out on top, in control of a world, a Universe, that you create and over which you have dominion.
The Ace of Swords is a card of new beginnings, possibilities and insight. It's a card that represents the result of what the next six months are a part of creating is a place in which you have once and for all cut away all of the detritus that was hanging around, blocking the light, holding you back, making things foggy and unclear. The next six months will be a time in which you are starting to move to a point of new ideas, perspectives and objectives, able to see what's important and know what you have to do in order to achieve that, moving directly and confidently towards it, willing and able to knock back or cut away those things that may have once seemed important or unconquerable before but now are simply minor obstacles and hurdles.
And the Tower card shows us that the next six months are simply laying the groundwork for a major upheaval, shift and change in your life as you know it. What has been familiar or become run of the mill or seemed to be the rut in which you were stuck for the longterm will be no more. A radical and explosive change awaits, one that will rock your world. It may be a difficult process to get through, but ultimately, this being the number 16 card, what waits beyond it is that card number 21, the Universe.

Feedback from G:
HiC,
Over the years, I have had many tarot card readings. Oftentimes, they've been general, overviews making me think they could apply to anyone. Until you started doing my readings!
Every tarot reading you've
done for me has been intense, intuitive and inspirational. Your readings are
packed with insights and provide me with greater knowledge and guidance. You
meticulously take each card as a
separate entity, then relate it back to the whole of the reading, revealing
more depth and intuitive thought.
In the reading you just completed for me, your interpretation of the "Career" grouping of cards was especially astute. The combination of The Hermit, The Deceiver and Four of Cups and the summation you provided, gave me greater understanding and clarity of the direction my work life is headed and reinforced my own personal beliefs. Although I was disappointed by the "Relationships" grouping, I appreciated your honest yet gentle approach to the interpretation.
In conclusion, I can't thank you enough for your insights and interpretations. Thank you again. Take good care, G
